Clean Eating Tip – Keep your Lean Protein Sources Stocked

Figure Foodie

Eating clean means spending time preparing and eating five to eight meals a day. Having lean protein on hand ensures you can make a quick meal in a pinch and don’t have to spend a lot of your day preparing food.

Instead of grilling just a couple of chicken breasts, cover your grill with chicken and find creative uses for the leftovers. Chicken and turkey breasts make great salad toppers, work well in omelets and wraps, or can be mixed with Shirataki noodles dabbled with salsa.

There are several quick lean protein sources require storage space and can be cooked very quickly and easily. My favorites are frozen fish fillets (not the boxed kind but the ones that are just fish, flash frozen), frozen extra-lean ground turkey, eggs, and liquid egg whites. Protein powder is also a quick and highly versatile source of protein.

Keeping your kitchen stocked with quick protein sources ensures that when you need something fast, it is ready in just minutes.

Clean Eating Trick: Shaved Ice

Figure Foodie

Figure Foodie

A great way to stick to a clean diet is to find treats that do no harm. A great do-no-harm treat that will also keep you cool during the hot summer months is shaved ice. The best part is, you can make this treat virtually calorie-free and it is very filling!

You’ll need a shaved ice maker (try Target or ebay, make sure you get one that can use plain old ice cubes). A decent enough one costs about 20 bucks, then you are ready to roll.

After shaving the ice, add the liquid flavoring. Experiment to find your favorites:

  • Lemon juice, water, and no/low-cal sweetener
  • Coffee and no/low-cal sweetener
  • Crystal light and water
  • Light coconut milk and no/low-cal sweetener
  • Flavored, carbonated water

After the Competition

The competition was this last weekend and was a blast. I stayed true to my diet and cardio regimen until the end, stayed relaxed, and regularly practiced posing. I hit all the details: hair, makeup, nails, tan, and presentation. I can honestly say I put in 100%, felt good on stage, and made improvements over the previous year.

It was a fun weekend too, all girl time and lots of glamour. My face still hurts from smiling and laughing so much. The first whiff of spray tan got me revved up into the new competition season and reminded me how much I enjoy this sport.

So, where did I place? Everyone wants to know… I got 2nd in the Master’s division and 2nd in the Open Short class. It wasn’t first place which is always what I shoot for but I am ok with my placing. I missed first place in Open Short Class by 1 point (so I was told but the scorecards aren’t posted yet). The competitor who placed first is my good friend and training partner, Julia Stackhaus.

It’s strange though—I worked so hard to get for this show and was so focused that now it feels like there is a hard line drawn in my personal timeline, a “before” and “after.” The extreme focus prior to the show was starting to push everything else out (as you may have noticed my frequency of posts dropped lots too).

So now that the show is over, I am left with the “what now” feeling. Along with the physical exhaustion I feel a little stunned and need to re-find my footing and get back to nurturing the things I was neglecting during contest prep.

Photos coming as soon as I get some!

5 Days Until Competition

It’s getting to the point where I just can’t think about Saturday’s show or I will start worrying about it. As long as I don’t think too much I feel good: relaxed, rested, and confident.

The most recent diet changes let me see a change every day now. I admit, I was freaking out three weeks ago – thinking I’d never be ready, but my trainer pulled it off again. I am amazed at how he does it and knows what kind of results he will get.

Just a couple of training sessions left! Only three more nighttime trips to the treadmill. YAY! Cardio is so boring it nearly kills me. Strange how the diet doesn’t bother me, but the treadmill night after night gets to be TORTURE.

Although this week’s diet IS rough…I miss my oatmeal and rice! But those Samoas are in my cabinet and aching to come out to see me Saturday night when this is all over!

I’ve been lax in providing photo updates…maybe tomorrow. Just can’t seem to remember to do it. Could it be the lack of carbs are getting to my brain? hmmmm….
