Personally, I am not into making fancy drinks. When eating clean and watching your waistline, drinking extra calories is a waste. It doesn’t fill you up and provides little nutritional value.
BUT…nothing warms you up like hot cocoa. The “diet” versions of hot cocoa that are available in your local grocery store, can taste pretty good at only 25 calories, but contain added salt and other ingredients, such as sodium phosphate and acesulfame potassium, that I have no idea where they come from.
Not only is this recipe made with real ingredients, but it contains 4g of fiber and antioxidants from the cocoa powder; which next to raw chocolate nibs, is the best source of antioxidants from chocolate.
Around this time of year, I crave hot cocoa so I quickly throw together this drink for a treat.
Ingredients
2 T cocoa powder
¼ t ground cinnamon
Dash ground nutmeg
14 oz. strong, hot coffee (or use 3 t instant coffee with hot water)
Your choice of sweetener, to taste
1 inch sugar-free candy cane (optional)
Directions
Mix first four ingredients in a large coffee mug and add coffee until your mug is one quarter full. Use a fork to whisk the ingredients together to dissolve all lumps. Fill coffee cup, add sweetener, and, if desired, a piece of sugar-free candy cane. Stir and enjoy.
