However, in the U.S., Italian food is also the most fattening foods served in restaurants.
Based on the amount of pizza consumed in this country, pizza is more American than apple pie!

Here in the fast-food nation that is America, pizzas are made with high-gluten flour, and are topped with low-water content tomato sauce complete with added sugar and salt, and the toppings typically include a lot high-fat cheese and meats. As many Americanized pizzas are very high in salt and fat, concerns have been raised about the negative effect on people's health. Some pizza chains have recently been criticized for creating pizzas with twice the daily recommended amount of sodium for an adult.

Here's a clean eating idea for pizza that gives you a tasty, crispy, thin-crust pizza without all that salt, fat, and sugar.

If you try only one recipe on FigureFoodie.com, make it this recipe for Seriously Sinful (yet guilt-free, of course) Strawberry Ice Dream!

The serving size of low-calorie ice cream and sorbet are typically small and also contain artificial ingredients and refined sugars. This make-at-home recipe is made from real fruit and contains only 1 gram of fat and no artificial ingredients or preservatives. It lives up to the "dream" part in its name by packing 20g(!) of protein and 3g of fiber! The best part is you can have it ready to eat in about 10 minutes.

At a Glance Info
Time to Prepare: About 10 minutes, start to finish
Nutritional Info: For ¾ cup serving - 133 calories, 1g fat, 12g carbohydrates - 3g fiber, 20g protein, 124mg sodium
Dietary Restrictions: Gluten-Free, Vegetarian, Low-Carb, Low-Sodium
Additional Info: High in protein – 20g per serving; requires the use of a large food processor or blender

Simple yet classic, pesto sauce is traditionally prepared with a mortar and pestle using a combination of basil, crushed garlic, parsley, grated hard cheese, pine nuts, and a little olive oil. Although you may associate pesto sauce as a sauce for pasta, a thin coating of this sauce can breathe new life into flatbread or cooked chicken breast or fish. It can also add gusto when mixed in with your veggies.

I was inspired to make a clean version of sweet and sour cucumbers when dining at a Chinese restaurant. I sampled one and found that they were really tasty but I knew they were covered with sugar, something that happens with a lot of ethnic foods that have been "Americanized." Cleaned up without the extra sugar, these make a great appetizer or a snack that will really fill you up.

These cukes are really handy when you are trying to control your portions and yet still crave food. You know... those times when you just need to have something. Cucumbers are mostly water; high-water content foods make your belly feel really full. This snack will fill you up while only sneaking in 38 calories, so eat up to fill up.
